Leadership With Service

Montrose students kicked off the new semester with a school-wide Day of Service, giving back to local organizations.
The Day of Service was organized by student leaders in the school service group, Contemplatives in Action. Each grade worked on a service project for a different local charity, from 6th grade students creating valentines for the residents of the local nursing home to seniors assembling winter tool kits for Boston-area homeless shelters. Montrose families contributed by donating items for the various service projects.

Olivia Hastie '18, one of the student leaders of Contemplatives in Action, thanked the girls and donors for their generosity. “In connection with the corporal works of mercy, we are thrilled to share a day committed to serving others with the whole school community,” she said. “We are excited to reflect and learn from our work.”

The students came together at the end of the Day of Service for an all school service project, sorting bins of items for Dignity Matters, a local organization which provides feminine hygiene products to homeless women and girls. Crista Mahoney, Catholic Chaplain at Babson College, addressed the students and emphasized the importance of service. She noted that Christ practiced corporal works of mercy as the girls were doing. “We are called to follow his actions. He did this to show others their own dignity and worth, that they are loved by God.”

“Challenging each student to cultivate leadership with service is at the heart of the Montrose School mission,” said Jennifer Schiller, service group advisor. “It is our hope that participating in the Day of Service will allow girls to practice leadership with service by engaging in charitable actions which directly impact the lives of needy men, women and children in our midst.”
